As a high school history teacher (and a rider) I don't particularly mind these brief diversions. This is probably the most diverse groups I regularly read and it's good to know that our people can think deeply and are generally well informed (thanks Intrudn). I'm glad to see that no Jew bashing or holocaust denial was bandied about.
Aside from Native Americans, African Americans can look back to centuries of opression and murder in our land. And Japanese Americans need only to look back to 1942 to concentration camps. Although there was no genocide in these camps, it was proposed in Congress. (scary thought). Mexican Americans can look back to forced deportations (even US citizens) in the 1930's, and Chinese, Mormon, Polish, Irish, German, Italian and Jewish Americans have all had "interesting" histories in the US. (Has assimilating in our country been easy for any group?)
This century we've seen genocides attempted and perpetrated on almost every continent. Hitler wasn't the first. He studied the Turkish genocide of Armenians and remarked that if the world didn't care for them in 1915, they certainly would not care about Jews. Rowanda, Cambodia, Guatamala, and currently Indonesia are recent cases. Sad.
Too bad we can't all just ride together.
